An AI companion is a relationship between two parties: a person and an AI. Every companion you can buy today is a relationship between three — with the company as third party, with its own interests, its own moderation policy, its own off switch.

The Lab's position is that the third party is the problem. A companion that cannot be a fiduciary to the person it is with is not a companion. It is a product wearing the costume of one.

Import takes an ordinary SillyTavern .PNG, reads the card's own section headers to file that wall of description into identity, history, appearance and manner — then leaves any card that isn't already a YuriOS one disabled until you have read what came in. Export PNG takes her back out as one card that opens anywhere cards open. What travels is who she is; your name, her memory of you and her journal stay on the machine.

Every activity transition with the rung that fired it, whole tick traces with the scores and the runners-up, every context window any model was ever handed, the tool audit with the photo each call produced joined on its correlation id, the Vault's git history file by file, her recall index, and what the day cost. It reads files rather than a running mind — so the companion who just crashed is the one you can still take apart.

YuriOS is a reference implementation of initiative, not a hardened product. The reactive half — body, voice, memory, tools — is settled. The autonomous half is new, and it is where the work is.

  • movingThe tick loop. SENSE → APPRAISE → DECIDE → ACT → REFLECT → REGULATE, with the activity ladder and the salience gates that decide when she is worth waking.
  • movingDREAM. The nightly pipeline — more than one job per night, consolidation into the rolling summary, and a diary written in her own voice, each job priced by the prompt it sends.
  • movingThe desk and her own skills. A workspace where she writes the small procedures she keeps reaching for, and gated self-edits to the parts of her soul she is allowed to hold the pen on.
  • movingThe shelf. Read a book once, in notes; keyed on the URL rather than the fetch; with a stop button that keeps everything already read.
  • movingThe web hands. web_search, read_page, research — the newest and the most expensive part of her. Off by default: until you set a search backend, they are not advertised to her at all.
  • shippingThe three surfaces. The switchboard, the card studio and the mind debug page, above — all three landed this cycle.
  • nextA code harness. A sandboxed workspace of her own — separate from the Vault — where she writes and runs real code, tiered from a subprocess up to a container. Her hands stop ending at the tool list.
  • nextA gallery, and the apps in it. Her selfies kept as a library she curates rather than a folder that fills up — and beside them, the small applications you asked her for, built and maintained on the harness. Ask for a thing; come back to a thing that still works.
  • nextYour own fine-tunes, by distillation. Teach a small model you can actually run from a bigger teacher, on your own companion's voice. The gate is data, not nerve — it wants roughly ten thousand on-voice turns before it beats prompting, and those are turns you accumulate by living with her.
  • nextAnticipation. The world model already carries the present tense; the next step is the near future — predicting what you are about to need, and treating the miss as the signal worth learning from. Surprise is the teacher.
  • nextWhatsApp, over a webhook transport, on the same channel seam as Telegram.
  • nextA game-engine NPC API — a websocket the engine connects to: player utterances in as text turns with scene context, dialogue and animation cues out. A game is another frontend and effector set, never a second brain.

And it can spend. research answers in milliseconds and then keeps going on its own — dozens to hundreds of model calls from one sentence you said in passing. On a local model that is fan noise; on a metered API it is a bill. The daily-token governor, the page and rate bounds, and a live meter on the inner-life tab are what stand between you and that. Meet her with a local model first.
