8. Synthesis: what we know, what is contested, what is unknown
What we know:
- Persona quality is gated by prompt/card craft, not raw model size.
- Memory matters more than any other technical feature for long-term user retention.
- Unilateral product changes that affect emotional intimacy destroy trust permanently.
- The audience for AI companions is large, growing, and willing to pay.
- The benefit users get is mediated by trust and feeling heard, not by raw capability (De Freitas et al., 2025) — the empirical basis for this book's fiduciary stance.
- Hybrid subscription + token economies extract more revenue per user than pure SaaS.
- Mobile NSFW on iOS is a dead end. Web is the freer surface.
What is contested:
- Whether long-term AI companion use is net beneficial or net harmful for users (probably "it depends on the user," but specifics are unsettled).
- Whether graph memory beats vector memory in practice (depends on workload).
- Whether fine-tuning a base model for character is worth it vs prompting + RAG + a good card (usually no, until you have a lot of data).
- Whether you can build a serious companion brand without making your underlying creator identity public (this book bets yes; see Part VI).
- Whether NFTs / on-chain ownership of AI personas is a real thing or a 2021 cargo cult resurfacing (jury out; explored in ch. 39).
What is genuinely unknown:
- How to evaluate "personality quality" rigorously. Early benchmarks score companionship behaviour (INTIMA, 2025) and safety, but persona quality itself still has no accepted measure.
- How to give a companion genuine long-arc continuity over years, not just retrieval-style memory.
- What persistent embodied (robotic / AR) companions feel like to live with. Early. The Friend pendant flop was data but not enough.
- What happens to the field when on-device frontier-class models arrive (likely 2027–2028).
- What the regulatory environment looks like after the EU AI Act fully bites (Aug 2026), the inevitable next high-profile lawsuit, and state-level US action.
